Hey everyone,
Yesterday morning Google updated its Search Status Dashboard with one quiet line.
"Released the March 2026 core update. Rollout may take up to 2 weeks."
No warning. No explanation. Just live.
This is Google's first core update of 2026, arriving right on top of a spam update that dropped just days earlier. Two major algorithm shifts in the same month. If you publish anything online, that combination matters.
What a core update actually does
Most algorithm changes are small and targeted. Core updates are different. They rewrite how Google evaluates relevance, quality, and trust across the entire web, for every site, every language, every country.
This one hit fast. Over 55% of monitored websites saw ranking shifts within the first two weeks. Some businesses reported organic traffic drops of 20 to 35%. SEMrush Sensor volatility hit 9.5 out of 10, one of the highest readings ever recorded. Around day eight there was a second sharper wave of changes that caught even more people off guard.

What just got rewarded
Original content won. Sites publishing proprietary data, real expert interviews, first-hand accounts, and content that genuinely cannot be found anywhere else moved up.
Google's E-E-A-T framework, which stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness, became significantly more powerful in this update. The algorithm is now asking three questions about every page it ranks.
Did a real person who actually knows this topic write this? Does this page say something the other ten results do not? Is there real evidence of lived experience with this subject?
What just got buried
Thin AI content dropped hard. Not because AI was used, but because the output lacked original insight. The algorithm is now specifically weighting something called Information Gain, meaning how much genuinely new information your page adds compared to what already ranks. Recycled summaries and rewording of existing articles are losing ground fast.
Parasitic SEO was also targeted directly. Low-quality content sections published on authoritative domains to borrow their ranking power are now being algorithmically separated from site authority.
Five things to do right now
Open Google Search Console and check which pages dropped before you do anything else. Audit your weakest content and ask honestly whether it adds something real. Add visible author bios and credentials to build trust signals. Run your site through PageSpeed Insights because slow load times are now a ranking liability even if your content is strong. And structure your content with clear question-based headings because AI Overviews and tools like Perplexity pull from content that directly answers a question.
The honest takeaway
Google is facing an existential challenge it helped create. AI tools are giving people answers without sending them to websites. Google's response is to surface content AI cannot replicate. Real voices. Original data. Genuine expertise.
Your newsletter is exactly that. Keep doing the work.
Catch you next time,
— Raja Tahoor Ahmad
