The biggest AI news this week isn't a new benchmark or a faster model. It's something far more practical: your AI coworker just learned to follow you around.

On July 7, Anthropic pulled Claude Cowork off the desktop and put it on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Android. What used to be a single-machine tool now travels with you all day.

Cowork launched in January as a desktop-only preview for macOS and Windows. A March update let you check on tasks remotely from your phone, but starting a task, steering it, and reviewing files all still meant sitting at your computer.

That changes now. Eligible users get a real Cowork tab on iPhone, iPad, Android, and claude.ai — not just a window into your desktop, but a place to start, monitor, and finish tasks from wherever you are.

The rollout begins in beta for Max subscribers, with Anthropic planning to open it to more plans over the coming weeks.

The most significant addition isn't mobile access. It's what happens when you're not looking.

Cowork sessions now run in the cloud by default. Close your laptop, leave the office, switch devices — long-running tasks keep executing in the background instead of freezing the moment your machine falls asleep.

When Claude hits a decision only you can make, it doesn't guess. It sends a notification, waits for your sign-off, and picks up right where it left off.

Anthropic also merged chat and Cowork into a single home — at least to start.

On web and desktop, conversations, projects, and Cowork tasks now share one sidebar and one search instead of living in separate tabs. Mobile keeps its own dedicated Cowork tab for now, with deeper integration on the way.

Alongside the launch, Anthropic released usage data from 1.2 million anonymized Cowork sessions across more than 600,000 organizations. The numbers undercut the assumption that agentic AI is mostly a coder's tool:

Put plainly — for every session spent writing code, roughly four went to ordinary business admin, and two to content work.

That's the real story here. The race isn't about who builds the smartest chatbot anymore. It's about who builds an AI that quietly handles the unglamorous work — the reporting, the reconciling, the drafting — that never makes it into anyone's job title but eats a huge chunk of everyone's week.

Anthropic is also extending its already-doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5, giving eligible Pro, Max, and Team users more room to stress-test the new experience during the rollout.

This isn't happening in a vacuum. OpenAI brought its Codex coding agent to mobile back in May. Google and Microsoft are pushing their own agentic features into everyday tools. Every major lab is racing toward the same target: an assistant that keeps working long after you've closed the app.

Desktop is still where Cowork does its deepest work. Local files, browser control, and live artifacts remain desktop-only for now. But that gap looks like the next thing Anthropic wants to close, not a permanent limitation.

Claude Cowork's mobile debut isn't really about phones. It's a preview of an AI that remembers your projects, keeps working while you're away, and meets you on whatever screen you're holding.
